semiotics

Semiotics (wiki)

The study of signs and sign-processes (semiosis) — everything that can stand for something else to someone.

Definition round — what makes a sign a sign:

  • the-lying-criterion — semiotics studies everything that can be used to lie; detachability IS aboutness
  • lying-vs-false-statement — three axes, five cells; where atmosphere marketing and LLM confabulation each sit

The five lines:

  • the-peirce-line — the triad as relay; icon / index / symbol; unlimited semiosis braking into habit
  • the-saussure-line — signifier / signified, arbitrariness, difference; the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes (the deep treatment stays at signifier)
  • the-barthes-line — second-order signification: denotation as the alibi, myth read as fact
  • the-eco-line — the lazy machine, the Model Reader, aberrant decoding, encyclopedia over dictionary, the limits of interpretation
  • the-baudrillard-line — sign value, the three orders of simulacra, the Bretton Woods isomorphism, and Lotman's semiosphere as a coda

Where the vocabulary earns its keep. Semiotics is an analytic vocabulary, not a predictive science, and the registers differ per line: Peirce's trichotomies and Eco's criterion are working tools; Saussure's difference principle was vindicated by embedding geometry; Barthes and Baudrillard are lenses (critique and prophecy); structuralism's universal-code programme is dead. It still earns daily bread in brand and design practice, in film analysis, and at the cognitive-semiotics seam — which, in Lotman's terms, is the highest-yield translation zone.

Standing cross-links: abduction (Peirce's other invention) · cognitive-science · confabulation-in-marketing · linguistics (Saussure's home discipline).
