signifier

Saussure: the sign's two faces

Sign (signe) = signifier (signifiant: the sound-image — /shù/ as a psychic sound-pattern, not the physical wave) + signified (signifié: the concept — not the real tree; the referent is outside the system entirely). Shorthand: the sign is a key-value pair; the signifier is the bare key.

Two axioms:

  • Arbitrariness (l'arbitraire du signe): no natural bond between sound and concept (arbre / tree / Baum).
  • Difference: "Dans la langue il n'y a que des différences sans termes positifs" — in language there are only differences, without positive terms. A signifier is defined by not being its neighbors (/b/ is whatever /p, d, g/ are not; the chess knight replaced by a button is still the knight). A graph whose nodes have no content, only edges.

The signified is differential too: English sheep/mutton vs French mouton — the concept's boundary is set by its neighbors, not by intrinsic content. Saussure's image: language is a sheet of paper, thought the front, sound the back — one cut through both amorphous continua at once. So the accurate model is not a hashmap with independent values but two partitioned continua, cells defined by boundaries not contents, the sign system a pairing of cells.

The Cours' diagram:

        ↑ ┌─────────────┐ ↓
         | concept | <- signified
         |───────────────|
         | sound-image | <- signifier
        ↑ └─────────────┘ ↓

Every stroke is a claim: the ellipse — the sign is a closed unity (two sides of one sheet); the double arrows — reciprocal, pointwise-stable evocation; concept on top — meaning's primacy; the line — a mere separator.

Lacan's rewrite: S/s

S <- signifier, capital, on top
   ─ <- the bar: a barrier, not a separator
   s <- signified, lowercase italic
  • Ellipse deleted: no bonded unity — the signifier's partner is the chain (S→S→S), not "its" signified.
  • Arrows deleted: no stable lookup. The signified slides beneath the chain (glissement) and is pinned only retroactively at quilting points (points de capiton — you know what the start of a sentence meant only at its end). Hearing /shù/ alone retrieves nothing (树/数/术/述/竖); the chain settles it after the fact.
  • Bar welded shut: crossing it is an operation (metaphor), not the default state. Meaning is an effect of the signifier (effet de signifié) — computed at read time from the chain, not stored.

Lacan's counter-diagram: two identical doors, one signifier above each — HOMMES / DAMES. The signified side is indistinguishable; the signifier pair carves the reality. Words do not label the world; they cut it.

Two operations (Jakobson's two axes, from aphasia studies): metaphor (substitution, paradigmatic) = Freud's condensation; metonymy (displacement along the chain, syntagmatic) = Freud's displacement. That mapping is the actual content of "the unconscious is structured like a language". And desire = metonymy: the ce n'est pas ça slide from link to link (lacan).

The subject in the chain: "Un signifiant représente le sujet pour un autre signifiant" — the classical sign "represents something for someone"; the signifier's definition deletes the someone. A phone number is the pure case: motiveless, differential (only required to differ), representing you to other entries — never to a person.

Sign vs symbol vs signifier

signsymbolsignifier

replaceable?by conventionnofreely, if distinctness is kept
examplethe word "tree"dove, scales, red-as-dangerphone number, phoneme, the avoided 4th floor

The avoided "4" (4/死) is a pure signifier operation: nobody fears the number, people route around a sound — a key collision, meaning untouched. Dreams, symptoms, slips (Freud's Signorelli) compute on keys, not values: the psychoanalytic object is exactly the meaning-stripped half of the sign — which is why the concept had to be isolated at all.

Terminological trap: Peirce's "symbol" = conventional (≈ Saussure's arbitrary sign), while Saussure's symbole = motivated; the two usages are complementary opposites. And Lacan's Symbolic order is badly named — it is the order of signifiers; motivated resemblance belongs to his Imaginary.

Genealogy in one run (each era's crisis reshapes the concept)

Stoics (truth needs an incorporeal bearer: the lekton; the referent already excluded) → Augustine (hermeneutics; De Magistro: signs teach only what you already know) → scholastics / Port-Royal / Locke (supposition, reference, epistemic hygiene — the sign as transparent servant) → Saussure (a science needs an object: langue; differences without positive terms; his early laryngeal conjecture posited a phoneme from structural gaps alone — the differential method's first triumph; his unpublished anagram notebooks, the autonomous signifier running under the text, prefigure Lacan and frightened him into silence) → Prague / Jakobson (difference made operational: phonology, distinctive features, the two axes) → Lévi-Strauss (society as symbolic exchange; the floating signifier: mana as "symbolic value zero") → Lacan (the unconscious as signifier-chain; against ego psychology) → Derrida (no transcendental signified — every signified is another chain's signifier; différance) → Barthes / Baudrillard (second-order signification, sign-value: ideology, consumption) → Deleuze/Guattari ("the signifier is the sign of despotism"). Arc: transparent servant → autonomous system → sovereign → deposed tyrant.

LLM aside

Token embeddings are a purely differential system — a token has no intrinsic content, only its relations to all other tokens (Firth: "you shall know a word by the company it keeps" — the corpus version of Saussure's axiom). An LLM is a pure S→S machine with no signified stored anywhere that nonetheless produces meaning-effects: a mechanical existence proof of "the signified is an effect of the signifier chain" (1957) — and equally of Derrida's no-anchor: the chain slides all the way down.
