Deliberately thin: the full philosophical treatment (including Lacan's S/s rewrite) already lives at signifier. This note adds the semiotics-course framing and the craft coordinates, and does not duplicate it.
The dyad, and what it deletes: sign = signifier (sound-image, psychic) / signified (concept, psychic). Both mental; the referent — the world — is outside the model by design. All Saussurean signs are Peircean symbols; icon and index left with the world. Full treatment: signifier.
Arbitrariness, with its twin consequences: mutable in history (no motivated bond to defend), immutable to individuals (the bond's force is communal — a private redefinition has zero power).
Difference: the three moves that make it stick
- Try defining "blue" without naming its neighbors. Impossible — and that impossibility is not vocabulary failure, it is meaning's construction: the term's whole content is its boundary; remove the neighbors and the residue is zero ("no positive terms").
- Watch a neighbor move in. Real history: Old English sceap covered animal and meat; Norman French moved mouton in next door for the table (mutton) — and sheep's territory shrank to the living animal WITHOUT anything happening to the word itself. What changed was the layout. Meaning lives in the layout, not in the atom.
- The instrument on the bench already implements it. An embedding vector means nothing alone; its entire meaning is position relative to all other vectors, trained purely on distributional differences — cosine similarity is a valeur metric. Saussure 1906, realized as geometry.
The two axes: the coordinate system of every expressive choice
The one Saussurean tool worth full residence. An utterance is a row of slots. Syntagmatic axis: each slot's relations to its present neighbors — order, collocation, rhythm. Paradigmatic axis: behind each slot stands the column of rejected candidates — writing 抿 means-with the shadow of the unwritten 灌; the meaning of a choice = the choice × the shadow of its alternatives.
Craft cash: word choice; typography (serif signifies against the rejected sans); a tonality sheet is a per-slot paradigm commitment; a storyboard is two-dimensional writing — material per shot = paradigm, shot order = syntagm — and the rule that adjacent shots must relate, never merely queue, is a syntagmatic rule. Jakobson's extension (from aphasia): metaphor = paradigmatic substitution, metonymy = syntagmatic slide; each aphasia type paralyzes one axis.

- langue / parole: study the rulebook, not the utterances.
- synchrony / diachrony: the current board suffices — reading an arena needs no archaeology.
