The Baudrillard line — sign value, simulacra, and the money isomorphism
Register up front: prophecy and polemic, deliberately hyperbolic (The Gulf War Did Not Take Place is a real title). Untestable; held as a lens.
1 · Sign value: valeur economics
Marx had use value and exchange value; Baudrillard adds sign value: goods consumed as positions in a differential system — you buy the coordinate "one who owns this model rather than that", not the machine. Saussure's valeur applied to commodities; consumption as a language spoken in objects. Luxury is the pure state (use value near zero, coordinate value total). The street where confabulation-in-marketing lives.
2 · The three orders of simulacra, and the four phases of the image
- Counterfeit (Renaissance): the sign imitates a natural original; real/fake still decidable.
- Production (industrial): signs mass-copied; THE ORIGINAL DISAPPEARS — of two identical machines off the line, neither is "the" original; the question dies.
- Simulation (now): the sign precedes and generates the real. Borges inverted: "the territory no longer precedes the map… the map engenders the territory." Hyperreality: the real produced from models, realer than real. His examples: Disneyland (presented as fantasy so the rest reads as real), polls (measuring the opinion they manufacture).
Image phases, one line each: reflects a deep reality → masks it → masks its ABSENCE → bears no relation to any reality (pure simulacrum).
3 · The Bretton Woods isomorphism
Symbolic Exchange and Death, five years after the Nixon shock: signs floating free of referents and currencies floating free of gold are one structural mutation, two sites. Monetary history performs the three orders:
- full-bodied coin = order 1 (sign IS the referent; verify by weighing);
- convertible paper / Bretton Woods = order 2 (referent held elsewhere, a chain of pegs — dollar to gold, currencies to dollar; the note is a warehouse receipt);
- post-1971 floating fiat = order 3 (anchor cut; a currency's value is ONLY its position in the exchange-rate network — floating FX is the purest institutional realization of Saussure's "no positive terms"). Financialization then lets the map trade itself: derivatives are signs of signs, notional value dwarfing the "real" economy — the map larger than the territory, literally.
The governing question the isomorphism sharpens: after the anchor is cut, what disciplines the sign? Gold convertibility (the ultimate verifier) is replaced by an engineered immune system — central banks, inflation targets, credibility. The failure mode has a name: hyperinflation, anchorless emission. Carried back to signs: the AI content flood is semantic inflation — marginal cost of sign production at zero, the printing press aimed at meaning; anti-slop doctrine and editorial judges are structurally semantic central banking: maintaining the purchasing power of signs in an anchorless era.
Two honest caveats: the parallel is Baudrillard's own; and economists dispute "fiat is anchorless" (tax power, productive capacity, the state's monopoly of force are anchors — MMT's quarrel) — which, translated back, ENRICHES the analogy: "floating signs are anchored after all, in communal enforcement" is exactly arbitrariness' second consequence (no individual can move the convention).
4 · The present through this lens
- Generative AI = order three industrialized: referent-free images wearing the face of the index (the-peirce-line's forged credential, at scale).
- The influencer economy = map engendering territory daily: the persona precedes the person; places built in order to be photographed — territory constructed to match the map.
- The desire triangle closes: in a sign-value economy the object of desire was always a coordinate, not a thing.
5 · Lotman, the side dish with one good bite: the semiosphere
Signs live only inside a sign ecology (biosphere analogy): no first sign, as no first cell — semiosis presupposes semiosis. The usable part: the boundary is a translation membrane — new meaning is generated where different codes meet; centres are normative and inert, innovation enters from the periphery through translation.
Kin: the-saussure-line (the deleted world, here acted out historically) · the-lying-criterion (the verification-strength axis, monetized).
