reactance

Psychological Reactance (Brehm, 1966)

When a person perceives a threat to a behavioral freedom — being told what to think, do, or buy — they experience reactance, a motivational drive to restore the freedom, often by doing or believing the opposite. This is the mechanism behind the boomerang effect: heavy-handed persuasion produces attitude change away from the advocated position. Reactance rises with the importance of the freedom, the magnitude of the threat, and how explicit/controlling the language is ("you must", "everyone should", "the only correct view").

Transfer. This is the single most common way confident, agent-produced content fails: the tone that reads as authoritative to the writer reads as coercive to the reader, and triggers reflexive rejection regardless of argument quality. The defenses are concrete — restore agency in the framing ("you might find", "decide for yourself", show the trade-off and let them choose), avoid superlative closure, and never tell the reader what they'll conclude before they conclude it. Openly acknowledging their freedom to disagree measurably increases compliance. For high-involvement skeptics (Reddit, HN), soft framing is not politeness; it is the only register that gets past the door.
