clarity-and-defense

The central-route tools of persuasion-theory: make the message clean (Grice), make it hold up under attack (inoculation), and don't overload the reader (cognitive load). These matter most for a high-involvement audience that is actually reading.

Grice's Cooperative Principle & the 4 maxims (foundational in pragmatics)

Cooperative communication obeys four maxims: Quantity (right amount, no more/less) · Quality (truthful, evidence-backed) · Relation (relevant) · Manner (clear, unambiguous, orderly). DO THIS: run every draft through the maxims as a concision/clarity checklist — cut what violates Quantity, verify Quality, delete the irrelevant (Relation), disambiguate (Manner). This is a precise spec for a lint on a draft and for prompting a generator toward tight copy. Implicature — deliberately flouting a maxim generates meaning the reader completes themselves (irony, understatement, a pointed omission): a controlled flout creates engagement, but only against a baseline of clarity.

Inoculation / "prebunking" (McGuire, 1961 — well-replicated)

Pre-exposing people to a weakened opposing argument plus a refutation builds resistance: the forewarning creates motivation, the modeled counter-argument arms them, and protection transfers even to un-addressed objections (the "umbrella" effect). DO THIS: to make a position stick against later attack, raise the objection yourself, in weak form, and refute it — "You might think X — but here's why not." Pre-empts the reader's own counter-argument. Strong for defensive/competitive messaging (and it's why the honest disclosure + scope-caveats in outsider-founder-earns-voice and the "here's where I got it wrong" transparency posts land as more credible, not less).

Dual coding + cognitive load (Paivio; Sweller; Mayer — well-established, education-derived)

Verbal and visual channels are separate; coherent words + aligned images beat either alone for comprehension and recall. But working memory is limited — redundant or misaligned visuals increase load and hurt. DO THIS: pair text with a relevant, aligned, non-redundant visual (a diagram over prose for a process); cut decorative clutter. Partial transfer: strongest for multimodal content (posts with images, slides, video — video-production-pipeline); pure text benefits only via the load principle (chunk, whitespace, one idea per unit — which also happens to be the clarity-and-frameworks declarative-sentence rule).
