encoding-decoding

Encoding/decoding (Hall, 1973)

Stuart Hall breaks the transmission assumption: a producer encodes a message within their codes, but the audience decodes it within theirs, so meaning is not delivered intact. Hall names three reading positions — dominant (accept the intended meaning), negotiated (accept broadly but bend it to one's own situation), and oppositional (understand the code yet read against it).

Transfer. You do not control the meaning that arrives; the audience re-makes it. Oppositional and negotiated readings are normal, not failures — which is why the same artifact lands as insight for one reader and as manipulation for another. For agent content this kills the fantasy of a message that "just works" at scale: you must anticipate the resistant decode and write for it (pre-empt the cynical read, meet the reader's code). It is also the deep reason matching intent matters — you are not transmitting a meaning, you are supplying material the reader will decode against their own prior.
