Processing Fluency (Reber, Schwarz & Winkielman, 1998–2004)

The subjective ease with which information is processed is itself read as a signal. Content that is fluent — legible, high-contrast, rhythmic, rhyming, familiar, simply phrased — is judged as more true, more likable, and asserted with more confidence, purely because it felt easy. The reader misattributes the ease of reading to the truth of the claim.

Transfer. Clarity is not courtesy, it is persuasion: a hard-to-parse sentence is silently discounted as less true, so tangled syntax costs an agent credibility it never sees the bill for. Legibility, short clean rhythm, familiar framing, and a rhyme or parallel all raise perceived truth independent of content — the delivery-craft case for plain, cadenced prose has a cognitive mechanism, not just taste. But fluency is also a trap that cuts the other way: it manufactures a feeling of understanding without the substance, and smooth-reading emptiness is precisely how slop passes — the median take is fluent by construction, easy and therefore falsely convincing. So use fluency to carry a real claim, and treat "it reads smoothly" as necessary but never sufficient; mid is what fluency feels like from the inside.

Kin: mere-exposure · picture-superiority · models · slop-is-a-context-deficit · anti-mid
