Picture Superiority Effect (Paivio dual-coding, 1971; Standing, 1973)
Pictures are remembered far better than words. Paivio's dual-coding theory explains why: an image is encoded twice — once visually, once verbally (you also name it) — while a word gets only the verbal code, so pictures have two independent retrieval routes. Standing's recognition studies showed near-unlimited memory for thousands of images.
Transfer. For agent-produced content this reorders where retention actually comes from. The same claim delivered as a concrete image, diagram, or visual metaphor out-retains its prose form — which is why the thumbnail, the one diagram, and the screenshot do disproportionate memory work, and why a text piece that evokes imagery (concrete nouns, a picturable scene) beats an equally-true abstract one. The deeper move: convert an abstraction into a single picturable object and you have bought a second encoding channel the purely-verbal competitor lacks. Abstraction is the default failure of machine text — it names concepts without ever handing the reader something to see; making the idea concrete enough to picture is both the memory fix and, per anti-mid, the taste fix.
