Terms (lacan): the big Other — no particular person but the presupposed structure/audience (language, the law, "everyone") a subject addresses and measures against; jouissance — enjoyment beyond use and beyond the pleasure principle; objet petit a — the object-cause of desire, structurally missed (ce n'est pas ça, "that's not it"); the modern superego command is not "thou shalt not" but "Enjoy!" (see labor-decoupled-from-recognition, terminal figure).
FOMO is the modern big Other's best phenomenological evidence — the structure made palpable:
- "Desire is the desire of the Other," undisguised. Ordinary mimetic desire still uses a prop: I want X because you want X. FOMO drops the object — one does not know what one is missing. The whole affect rides on one clause: the others are enjoying, without me. The mediation runs naked.
- It is faith, detectable in the flesh. The presumed "everyone having a life" does not exist — each member of that everyone is scrolling, FOMOing the others. A party where nobody enjoys, yet "the Other enjoys" functions anyway. FOMO is post-belief belief: God is dead, but "others are having fun" is immortal. Test: whoever feels FOMO believes in an unbarred, enjoying Other — whatever they profess.
- The superego's receipt. What does "Enjoy!" feel like from the inside? Guilt at not-enjoying-enough — everyone else is obeying the command, you are in arrears. FOMO is the delivery slip of the one command that cannot be obeyed.
- Objet a in temporal form. Arrive at the missed party: ce n'est pas ça. "Attend more" cannot cure FOMO, because what is missed is not an event but the Other's jouissance — which does not exist. Perfect attendance leaves the lack intact; the missing-ness is constitutive.
- Engineered missability. The feed — the first Other with a KPI (desire-is-labor) — found the cheapest desire-manufacture: skip objects, stimulate "others are enjoying" directly. Stories expiring in 24h are FOMO engineering: the scarcity is of the window, not the content; infinite scroll guarantees you can never verify that nothing was missed.
The old big Other was felt as a judge (guilt, shame); the KPI'd one is felt as an enjoyer (FOMO) — the same costume change as the superego's switch from prohibition to the command to enjoy.
False exit: JOMO (the "joy of missing out") keeps orbiting the Other's enjoyment with the sign flipped — the missable is still the axis. The real exit is not restraint but a different apprenticeship: an Other that does not post (a craft's tradition, dead masters, a rule) — the apprentice has no FOMO about the feed because his Other broadcasts on no channel.
