desire-is-labor

The blind spot: desire and labor are cast as opposites — supply and demand, one side provides, the other consumes. Wanting is treated as free, spontaneous, given. It is never counted as labor.

Why the invisibility: a scarcity artifact

Under scarcity the bottleneck is satisfaction, so every economic category forms around the satisfaction side; the cost of wanting rounds to zero next to the cost of getting. Economics axiomatizes the blindness: preferences are exogenous, utility functions are primitives — nobody bills for the labor of forming one. Revealed preference goes further and defines desire by consumption choices, making desire's production unobservable by construction. The production/consumption split is bookkeeping under a scarcity regime, not an ontological fact.

It was always labor — and already industrialized

Advertising is a trillion-scale industry whose entire product is desire. Fashion systems, critics, curators, mimetic models (Girard), recommendation feeds: whole professions of desire-work performed for others. Wanting feels free precisely because the labor was outsourced — finished desires arrive packaged, like any other good. The "pure consumer" never existed; supply/demand hides a second, unpriced production loop: the production of demand itself. The attention economy half-admits this by pricing desire-formation's raw input (attention).

Literal, by Hegel's own criteria

Hegel's definition: labor = inhibited desire (gehemmte Begierde) that forms a persisting product. Desire-work passes both tests: forming taste requires refusing candidate wants (inhibition — anyone who has scrolled a feed knows what "not this" costs), and its product — a formed preference — persists, transmits, compounds (connoisseurship accrues). And it is self-referential labor: the tool (inhibiting desire) and the material (desire) are the same faculty — which is why it produces selfhood directly, without the detour through the thing.

Retroactive re-reading of Hegel: gehemmte Begierde means labor was always double — the hands forming the object, the deferral forming the wanting; one visible product, one invisible. The slave's Bildung ran on the invisible half. And the master's dead end deepens: in outsourcing the labor of satisfaction he outsourced the labor of desire along with it — his wanting stayed raw, never worked. The master's emptiness is not (only) missing recognition; it is unworked desire.

The AI limit

Remove the object-side labor entirely and desire-labor stands naked as the only labor left (labor-decoupled-from-recognition, twist 1). This is immediately political economy, not self-help: who performs it — the self (taste-discipline; the ascetic traditions always knew desire takes work), or the feed (a fully automated desire-factory whose product is your wanting, and whose owner is not you)? When satisfaction is free, demand is the last commodity still requiring production — and the struggle is over its means of production.

The Lacanian correction: there was never an autonomous producer

Lacan's "desire is the desire of the Other" hits this note's implicit picture — an autonomous wanter whose desire-production the feed stole. Genetically there was no such workshop: the infant's wanting forms inside the mother's wanting (deciphering Che vuoi? — "what do you want of me?" — precedes wanting anything); every want arrives pre-formatted in signifiers one did not coin; one wants what others want, as they want it. The position "external instance that shapes my wanting" was occupied from birth — mother, family, language, class, tradition. The feed did not invade the workshop; it changed the occupant of an ancient seat.

What follows:

  • "Is this want really mine?" has no answer. Every want has external origin; the peel-away-society-and-find-your-true-desire project is structurally impossible — the onion has no core.
  • The charge against the feed relocates — not that it manufactures desire (everything always did) but how: the first Other with an objective function (engagement), a millisecond feedback loop, and the engineering goal of closing the very gaps in which one's own desire had play. The old Others were slow, un-optimized, inconsistent — and the inconsistency was the freedom.
  • The practical question turns from "stop outsourcing" (impossible) to choosing the master: apprentice the desire to an Other without a KPI — a craft's tradition, dead masters, a rule. There is no not-having a master; there is only which.
  • What remains "mine" is not origin but style. All the material is borrowed; the signature is in the playing, not the authorship — the person is in how they play.

And the thesis itself survives — strengthened. Deciphering the Other is labor (a lifelong hermeneutic task); forging borrowed material into a signature is labor (the pianist's touch: borrowed repertoire, ten thousand hours); apprenticeship is labor's classic form; and psychoanalysis bills by the hour for Durcharbeiten (working-through) — history's most honestly priced desire-workshop. In Marx's grammar: Lacan denies only that desire-labor was ever independent artisan production; it was always social production within relations of production — which makes "who owns the means of desire-production" more of a labor-politics question, not less.
