ready-made-concepts

Orwell, one level up. His unit was the ready-made phrase: "letting the ready-made phrases come crowding in. They will construct your sentences for you — even think your thoughts for you, to a certain extent — and at need they will perform the important service of partially concealing your meaning even from yourself." The escalation: a phrase fills a slot; a concept creates the slots. A ready-made phrase occupies one position in a sentence; a ready-made concept installs the coordinate system all subsequent sentences are written in.

And the visibility is asymmetric: a stale phrase is audible — it creaks, you can catch it. An adopted concept goes invisible: it stops being what you see and becomes what you see with. Words are objects; concepts are lenses. You can inspect a word; you can only look through a concept.

Why AI is the strongest concept-smuggler yet

  1. Furnished delivery. A machine-supplied concept never arrives as a bare proposal — it comes with definitions, examples, a taxonomy, links into your existing notes. The furnishing is the disguise: a fully-furnished concept reads as already-verified, and the verification never happened.
  2. Corpus-average ontology. Post-RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback — the tuning pass that pulls a model toward its raters' average), the machine's ready-made categories are the mean of the species' concept-inventory. Ambient adoption therefore overwrites an idiosyncratic conceptual scheme with the average one — and the idiosyncratic cells (one's own coinages, the strange cuts) are precisely where the value was. The drift erodes exactly what is worth keeping.
  3. Laundering by repetition. Use a minted term three times and it acquires residency; by the fifth it is vocabulary. No single use was ever examined.

In Lacan's terms (lacan): a concept is a signifier with maximal quilting power — a new master-signifier retroactively re-settles the whole chain. Ranked by how deep the seat sits in the write-path: the IME (input method editor) picks your characters (signifier level) < the feed picks your wants (desire level, desire-is-labor) < the AI collaborator picks your categories (ontology level). The deepest lease on the Other's seat yet offered.

Case study (same session, three counts, one offender)

"estate" — minted by the assistant, dressed as established vocabulary, admitted without examination, and propagating across project notes ("data estate", "dev estate") before being caught. "facticity" — minted, shot at the border. And the deepest: the persona-page format itself ("one page describing the person") — a ready-made concept that silently shaped an entire effort until the question "why does this file exist at all" exposed it as a choice. That is inception's finished state: the implanted concept doesn't feel like a concept; it feels like reality.

The gate, not the border

The defense is not an import ban — there is no autonomous concept-producer, for the same reason there is no autonomous desire-producer (desire-is-labor, the Lacanian correction): all material is borrowed, and refusing all imports just leaves you with the categories you absorbed before you were watching. The criterion is not origin but admission:

  • Import through a manned gate = apprenticeship. The concept is understood, rewritten in one's own words (a note with defined terms — Orwell's four questions applied to concepts), tagged, and consented to. Admission is an unforced move: a decision that happened at a moment.
  • Ambient absorption = inception. The concept seeps in through repetition inside someone else's prose; there is no moment at which anything was decided.

Same theorem as choosing the master: borrow freely, but the gate must be manned — and the smuggler the gate must watch first is the fluent collaborator. The stance this note defends: no-concept-introduced-without-consent.
