Sequential-Request Compliance Tactics

A family of two-step request techniques that raise compliance by manipulating the sequence rather than the offer itself:

  • Foot-in-the-door (Freedman & Fraser, 1966) — get a small yes first; a later large request rides self-consistency (cognitive-dissonance).
  • Door-in-the-face (Cialdini, 1975) — open with an extreme request sure to be refused, then retreat to your real (smaller) one; reciprocal-concession pressure makes the second feel like a deal.
  • Low-ball — secure agreement on attractive terms, then reveal added cost; the commitment already made holds.
  • That's-not-all — pile on extras before the target can respond, inflating perceived value.

These are the levers of persuasion at its most mechanical — and its most ethically loaded.

Transfer. Foot-in-the-door is the honest, durable one for awareness work and it is structural: the free tool, the one-line answer, the tiny useful commit is the small yes that earns the standing to make a larger ask later — the whole free-first funnel is foot-in-the-door at product scale. The retraction-based tactics (low-ball, door-in-the-face) buy a one-time conversion at the cost of the trust a content strategy compounds on; a reader who feels sequenced doesn't return. Use the ladder of small yeses; skip the bait.
