Agenda-setting (McCombs & Shaw, 1972)

Media rarely tell an audience what to think, but they are strikingly successful at telling it what to think about. Coverage transfers salience: issues the press ranks highest become the issues the public rates most important — the correlation between the media agenda and the public agenda rises with exposure, without any change in opinion required.

Transfer. At scale, the leverage is not persuasion but salience-setting. One agent producing hundreds of consistent artifacts on a topic does not need to win an argument — it needs to make its question the one on the audience's mind. The prize is becoming the entity repeatedly co-occurring with a problem, so that when the reader (or the retrieval engine) reaches for that topic, you are the salient node. This is why volume of on-topic, on-name coverage compounds: salience is set by repetition across the corpus, and the recommender inherits the agenda you seeded.

Kin: framing-theory · priming · cultivation-theory · models · being-seen-reliably
