GummySearch: reply, don't post
Fed (GummySearch — Reddit audience-research SaaS) is the only operator found who documented a repeatable, instrumented Reddit method with revenue attribution: ~$60k revenue year one (2021), $96k in 2023, >10k users / 400 paying customers — acquired on Reddit itself, method published in his own docs.
The method
- Track ~20 keywords relevant to the product (he built the tool to do this; saved searches approximate it).
- 10 minutes at the start and end of each day: answer freshly posted matching threads — recency means the question is still open and the thread's audience still arriving.
- Answer-shaped promotion: mention the product only when it directly solves the thread's stated problem; link a blog post or free trial, not a pitch — "you'll get called out much less."
- Contribution ratio: add more than you take (the cultural descendant of the folkloric 9:1 rule, which Reddit itself deleted after marketers gamed it with throwaway comments).
He claims hundreds of high-intent visitors/week from this loop; he ran the same play manually for his previous product (scripted searches for "looking for X communities" threads).
The meta-lesson attached to the case
GummySearch itself was shut down (Nov 2025 → wind-down through 2026) after Reddit's API (application programming interface) pricing/policy turned against third-party tooling — the platform killed the instrument that industrialized listening to it (reddit-industrialize-and-die). The method survives the tool: it was always executable with saved searches and discipline.
PRINCIPLES
- Replies beat posts: the high-intent surface is other people's fresh questions, not your own submissions.
- Recency is the targeting: a matching thread under an hour old is the whole edge; stale threads are graveyards.
- Promotion must be answer-shaped — the product appears only as the literal solution to the stated problem.
- Build the method on discipline, not on tooling the platform can revoke.
