The Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) — the router of persuasion-theory. Attitude change happens by one of two routes, and which one is active decides everything about how to persuade.
Central route — engages only when the audience is motivated (the topic genuinely matters to them) and able (has the knowledge, time, and focus to think it through). Here they scrutinize argument quality. Attitudes formed this way are durable, resistant to counter-persuasion, and predictive of behavior.
Peripheral route — dominates under low motivation or low ability. The audience doesn't process arguments; they lean on cues: source credibility, likeability/attractiveness, the sheer number of arguments (not their quality), emotional tone, processing ease. Attitudes formed this way are shallow and temporary.
DO THIS — diagnose involvement, then match:
- High-involvement (someone evaluating your product, weighing your thesis, comparison-shopping): lead with substantive evidence, specifics, logical structure. Peripheral cues alone fail here and can backfire (a slick pitch to a scrutinizing buyer reads as manipulation).
- Low-involvement (someone scrolling a feed, half-attending): win on credibility signals, a likeable voice, and one vivid claim — arguments won't be processed no matter how good, so don't spend the budget there.
For an awareness operation this maps onto the arena: a Reddit thread where someone asked the question is high-involvement (give the real argument, reddit-sop); a short-video feed scroll is low-involvement (win on the mute-proof cue, short-video-sop). Transfers fully to written/AI content — it is the master switch that selects which of the other persuasion-theory tools to deploy.
