peripheral-cues

The low-involvement levers of persuasion-theory — what persuades when the audience won't scrutinize arguments (the peripheral route of the-two-routes). Most potent on a scrolling feed; weak-to-backfiring on a scrutinizing buyer.

Cialdini's 7 principles (well-established; effects vary)

Reciprocity (give first) · commitment/consistency (a small yes sets up a bigger one) · social proof (people copy others under uncertainty) · authority (credentials reassure) · liking (we say yes to those we like/resemble) · scarcity (limited = valued, framed as loss) · unity (shared identity — "one of us"). DO THIS: instrument the message with concrete cues — give value before asking, show usage/testimonials, cite credentials, frame scarcity as what they'll lose, use inclusive "we." Ethical edge: Cialdini distinguishes legitimate cues (real scarcity, real endorsements) from manufactured ones; fabricated social proof or fake scarcity is manipulation and it erodes ethos — and, on a human-judged platform, gets you caught (reddit-industrialize-and-die, outsider-founder-earns-voice).

Processing fluency, mere exposure, rhyme-as-reason (well-replicated)

Ease of processing is misread as truth, liking, and confidence. Mere exposure (Zajonc): repetition breeds liking — inverted-U, overexposure breeds tedium (the empirical floor under Butcher's "repetition wears in", jack-butcher-the-format-factory). Fluency/truth effect (Reber & Schwarz): easy-to-read statements are judged truer. Rhyme-as-reason: rhyming claims are rated more truthful. DO THIS: make it easy to read — short words, clean typography, familiar phrasing, rhythm/alliteration in taglines; repeat key messages (within limits). Peripheral levers; ethical edge — fluency can make a weak claim feel true.

Framing (core insight robust; the gain/loss dial oversold)

Entman: to frame is to select aspects of reality and make them salient, pushing a particular problem-definition, cause, moral judgment, remedy. This core salience insight is robust — control the frame before arguing within it. Prospect theory (Tversky & Kahneman): losses loom larger than gains. The honest caveat: message-level gain-vs-loss framing effects are, by meta-analysis (O'Keefe & Jensen), very small and inconsistent (r ≈ −.04) — loss framing slightly favors detection/risky-behavior messages, gain framing prevention/low-risk, but treat this as a weak lever, not a rule. Don't build a strategy on the gain/loss dial; do control which facts are salient.

Primacy / recency (serial-position; well-established)

First and last items are remembered and weighted most; the middle is lost. Primacy wins with a delay before the decision; recency wins when the decision comes right after the last message. DO THIS: strongest point first (hook + primacy), key ask/takeaway last (recency), bury the weak middle. A structural rule for posts and threads (and it composes with the arrangement canon, the-three-appeals).
