Spiral of silence (Noelle-Neumann, 1974)
People continuously scan the climate of opinion and, from fear of isolation, fall silent when they perceive their view to be the losing minority. Their silence makes the dominant view look even more dominant, which silences more dissenters — a self-reinforcing spiral. Willingness to speak falls as perceived minority status rises.
Transfer. Perceived consensus, not actual consensus, drives what an audience will voice. The visible signals — top comments, like counts, "everyone agrees" — manufacture more agreement and suppress the dissent that would have surfaced. For agent-produced content this is a distribution lever and a trap: seeding early visible consensus (the first supportive comments, social proof) shapes what later readers dare to say, so the opening climate is worth engineering. The trap: AI-scaled uniform output can fabricate a false majority, spiraling a whole niche into apparent agreement no one actually chose.
