The theorem. An outcome can be industrialized only in a field where a mechanical arbiter scores every artifact, quickly and tirelessly. Given such a judge, production collapses into optimization — SOPs, A/B loops, gradient descent by org chart. Without one, the outcome stays a craft of persuading humans one at a time, and no manual transfers it.
Positive cases:
- YouTube fame (the-mrbeast-factory): the recommender scores every video on CTR (click-through rate) × watch-time within hours. That is why "I could make anyone famous" is credible there — and why the claim's author copied the judge's loss function into his company KPI, verbatim.
- SEO / GEO (generative-engine optimization): Google's index and the answer engines are interrogable judges — which is why a solo founder could run an interrogation loop against them and get measurable citations (FlexMesh's
geo-by-interrogation), and why Jenny Hoyos could extract the whole craft from public artifacts with crawlers.
Negative case, same founder, same product: reaching gig drivers in depot parking lots and WeChat groups has no arbiter — no per-artifact score, no fast feedback, no thing to iterate against. That half of growth resisted mechanization not for lack of skill but for lack of a judge (FlexMesh's reaching-gig-workers). The asymmetry inside one product's growth story is this theorem run as a controlled experiment.
The agent-era correction (2026): two boundaries, not one
The original theorem quietly fused two different questions, and agents split them apart:
- Can it be optimized (industrialized)? — needs a mechanical judge to score artifacts so you can climb the gradient. Agents do not change this: no judge, no score to ascend, so the depot lot still can't be optimized. The theorem, read as a claim about optimization, stands.
- Can it be automated (done without a human)? — this is what agents moved, and moved a lot. The open-ended, judgment-heavy, one-at-a-time human craft — research the pocket, converse in a WeChat group, personalize outreach, even soft-judge quality — is now executable by an agent. What used to require a human hand no longer does.
So "no arbiter → un-mechanizable" conflated can't-optimize with can't-automate. Agents leave the first true and largely dissolve the second. The negative case above is now only un-optimizable, not un-automatable: an agent can run the WeChat-group / depot-adjacent outreach as procedure (cold-start's decomposition — locate the pocket, enumerate targets, personalize genuine value), which a script never could.
The residual that survives even agents (what stays genuinely human):
- physical-world presence — a body at the depot, a real face at the event;
- standing that requires a real human identity — the account as reputational collateral, being vouched-for, relationships built over real time;
- irreducible taste — the final aesthetic/strategic judgment (the review bandwidth, Jenny's residual);
- accountability/consent — a real owner for the irreversible action (the human-approval gate).
The residual shrank; it did not vanish. And note the second axis this opens: an agent can itself be a (soft) judge — so a field with no mechanical arbiter can now get a synthetic one, which begins to erode even the optimization boundary at the edges (slop-is-a-context-deficit's soft-judge; the caveat: agent-judges share the producers' blind spots, so they don't fully substitute for a real external judge).
Corollaries:
- "Can this be industrialized?" is a property of the field, not the operator — ask "who scores the artifacts, how fast, how mechanically?" before asking "what's the method?"
- Where an arbiter exists, knowledge leaks and replicates (the manual, the crawler, the interrogation loop); moats degrade to capital and position. Where none exists, tacit craft keeps its rent.
- The arbiter's loss function colonizes the producers' goals (companies literally adopt CTR×AVD as KPIs) — whoever owns the judge owns the industry's objective function. (And may choose to publish its form while keeping its taste: open-sourcing-the-judge.)
