MECLABS Conversion Sequence Heuristic (McGlaughlin, MECLABS)

C = 4M + 3V + 2(I − F) − 2A

  • C = probability of conversion · M = motivation of the user (weight 4, the strongest) · V = force of the value proposition (3) · I = incentive to take action, offsetting friction (2) · F = friction (points of resistance) · A = anxiety (2, subtracted).

The genre's clearest specimen. MECLABS states outright it is not an equation to solve — a heuristic / thought tool; the numbers are relative weights, not measurable units. The whole payload is the ranking: motivation (×4) dominates — you cannot out-copy a visitor who doesn't want the thing; value proposition next; incentive and friction are a tug-of-war; anxiety only ever subtracts.

Transfer. It sorts what to fix first on any conversion surface: raise motivation (right audience, right moment) before polishing value; add incentive only to offset real friction, not as a bribe; hunt anxiety (trust, risk) as pure downside. For agent-produced awareness content the lesson is the coefficient order — chasing clever copy (V) while the traffic is unmotivated (M) is optimizing the small term.

Kin: illustrative-formulas · lift-model (the WiderFunnel cousin) · hormozi-value-equation · being-seen-reliably (motivation = demand interception).
